Children are currently being taught the white-washed version of U.S. history that declares the abolition of slavery in the 1800s, which is so painfully far from accurate.
Slavery was never fully abolished; it is used as a form of punishment for the millions of people incarcerated to this day.
The prison industrial complex isn’t taught in schools because it makes white people uncomfortable. We need to raise the awareness of a vulnerable and disenfranchised population of people, the majority of whom are disproportionately BIPOC.
I want to catch the attention of both parents and their kids in order to provoke these conversations. I want kids to look at the cartoon-style painting juxtaposed with the strong expression within and ask their parents what it means. I want parents to feel pressured to educate themselves so they’re able to effectively educate their kids. These conversations are an essential step to changing the operation of our current racist system.
